While riding a tram in Dresden early on Sunday, Rudat witnessed a group of men brutally beating two women, according to information shared on a fundraiser hosted by his brother’s girlfriend, Molly. Without hesitation, he intervened, which led to a vicious attack on him.
Emergency personnel rushed the young New Yorker, who had just earned his paramedic certification, to the hospital for treatment after he suffered severe facial knife wounds.

Photos taken after the incident showed blood on the tram floor, while passengers frantically tried to stop his bleeding with tissues before help arrived.
Molly, a first responder as well, told The Post, “We were a little scared when we found out.” The severity of his injuries was unknown to us.
“Hey, I was in an incident, I’m okay, but I was wondering if you could let my parents know because they weren’t picking up the phone,” he said over the phone while we were having dinner the other day.

Attacker with a criminal history
Rudat had been staying in Dresden with his former foreign exchange host family at the time of the attack. He later shared videos on social media that revealed one of the attackers had a history with the police as a violent criminal and a drug dealer.
Authorities later confirmed that they arrested a 21-year-old Syrian man in connection with the attack. Prosecutors later freed him, though, claiming there was insufficient evidence linking him to the stabbing.
The public prosecutor on call determined that there were not enough reasons to detain the defendant. He is not responsible for the knife attack,” Senior Public Prosecutor Jurgen Schmidt told Bild.

The news was upsetting for Rudat’s family in Albany, but they weren’t shocked considering his personality. His 22-year-old brother Logan told The Post, “I would have been surprised if he hadn’t stepped in.” It’s a feature of his personality. He continued, hoping his brother would soon be able to safely return home, saying, “That’s just the way we were raised.”
Rudat later spoke out against his attackers and what he called Europe’s larger immigration problems on Instagram while wearing a lot of bandages on his face. In the video, he stated, “If you didn’t think that Europe, and Germany in particular, had an immigration problem, let me impart some knowledge to you.”
The current time is 11:57 a.m. Rudat clarified that the man who assaulted the young woman will be released from custody in three minutes because he is not a citizen of Germany or the EU.
More from him

He is a drug dealer, an illegal immigrant, and well-known in this community, particularly among the police. This is not the first time it has occurred. He went on, “It’s not the first time that a man has beaten up women, and the other guy decided to swing a six-inch blade at my face.
Where is the law if they could harm German citizens and then simply be freed 12 hours later, let alone now? Where is the building located?
“If Germans must adhere to that law and structure, while these individuals can simply enter, wield knives, and harm, abuse, terrorize, and oppress German citizens, then what should we do?” he concluded, delivering his message clearly and concisely.

Since then, the U.S. Embassy in Germany has released a statement urging German authorities to take decisive action. “We implore German authorities to prosecute the offenders as soon as possible and to punish them to the maximum degree allowed by law.”
“No one is safe until everyone is safe; safety is a shared responsibility,” the embassy said.
Logan highlighted the overwhelming support for his brother while he was back in New York. “Everyone has been really supportive, and Johnny, Molly, and I are fairly well known in the capital region in terms of the first response community,” he said.
“Everyone has been really supportive of him, including all of my coworkers, Molly’s coworkers, friends, teachers, and Johnny’s coworkers.”
