‘GREAT BELIEVER’

Caprio disclosed that he had suffered a health setback and had gone back to the hospital for treatment in a heartbreaking video that he posted to his 3.2 million Instagram followers.

Lying in his hospital bed, Caprio opened up about his struggles, saying, “Last year, I asked you to pray for me, and it’s undeniable that you did because I came through a challenging period.”

“Unfortunately, I’m back in the hospital after a setback, and I’m coming to you again to ask that you keep me in your prayers.” Caprio went on in the poignant video, his words strong and honest.

“Therefore, if it’s not too much to ask, please keep me in mind when you pray.”

“I firmly think that prayers can change the world. I believe that God is watching over us. So please, keep me in mind.

When Caprio first sat on the bench in 1985, he quickly rose to fame in Providence, Rhode Island. Over the years, his reputation for kindness and fairness grew, and he eventually starred in his daytime television show, Caught in Providence, which ran from 2018 to 2020.

The judge received nominations for several Daytime Emmy Awards and often brought people to tears, especially during a standout case involving 96-year-old Victor Colella, who had received a speeding ticket.

After being fined for exceeding the speed limit in a school zone, Colella appeared before Caprio on his behalf. This incident quickly became one of the most iconic events in Caprio’s career.

After hearing the old man’s explanation, Caprio immediately dismissed the case. Colella clarified that he wasn’t usually a fast driver and that the only reason he was driving that day was to take his disabled son, who is 63, to have blood work done because he is fighting cancer.

“You’re a decent man. You truly embody the essence of America. Even though you are in your 90s, you continue to care for your family. Caprio expressed his respect and admiration for the man’s commitment to his family by telling him, “That’s just a wonderful thing for you.”

Caprio was well-known for saying, “I don’t wear a badge under my robe,” which encapsulated his views on justice. I have a heart in my body.

Caprio was a municipal court judge for almost 40 years, serving the people of Providence for nearly 40 years before formally retiring in October 2023.

Governor Dan McKee of Rhode Island ordered all flags flying from state agencies and government buildings to be lowered to half-staff in remembrance of Caprio’s life and contributions.

McKee told the public, “Judge Caprio was a Rhode Island treasure.”

I will miss him terribly because he was a friend who bravely dealt with his illness. During this trying time, my thoughts are with his family and loved ones.

“Judge Caprio not only provided excellent public service, but he also made a deep connection with the public, and his kindness and warmth compelled people to react.”

“On the bench, he was more than just a jurist; he was a symbol of empathy, demonstrating to us what can happen when justice is balanced with humanity.”
