Homeless Man’ Makes Drivers Angry After Getting Fooled By His Sign

Along one section of road, a homeless man's sign caused drivers to not only apply their brakes but also become somewhat dazed and confused as they realized they were falling into his trap far too late.

Unfortunately, in this day and age, seeing a panhandler on the side of the road is not all that uncommon. But Bethesda, Maryland, residents discovered the hard way that appearances aren’t always accurate.

Some people looked more closely at the homeless man who seemed to be pleading for money along the road, but most probably ignored him. They probably wished they had listened much earlier because they had to apply the brakes at that point. However, it was too late.

The homeless man gave drivers the surprise of their lives when they realized they were going directly into his trap while he was standing along the side of the road with a sign in the early morning hours as commuters made their way to work.

Roughly dressed, he held a sign in his hands that contained only a few brief words but conveyed a powerful message, alerting drivers to their error before it was too late.

“I don’t live on the streets. The sign held by the “homeless man,” who was Montgomery County Police Officer Patrick Robinson, boldly stated, “I am a Montgomery County police officer looking for cell phone texting violations.”

This informed drivers that Bethesda, Maryland, police had taken a tough stance against drivers who violate the law by using their phones while driving.

Distracted driving affects everyone and endangers all road users. The dangers of texting and driving extend beyond the individual who engages in this behavior.

When a distracted driver causes an accident and hits the car they are riding in, innocent children in that car can and have suffered the consequences.

Being fully aware of your surroundings is essential when operating a motor vehicle. In the technological age, constant phone use increasingly distracts drivers at critical moments.

This type of distracted driving can have catastrophic consequences in the vicinity of schools or kid-friendly parks. Devastating outcomes can occur if a child runs into the road while an oncoming motorist is looking at their phone.

Texting while driving is a major issue.

When the Maryland officers developed their strategy to combat texting and driving, they aimed to ensure that they apprehended offenders and held them accountable, keeping situations like that one in mind.

The homeless man is probably just one “ordinary disguise” that the officers will be using in the “sting operation,” which entails them going undercover while posing as regular citizens in order to catch criminals when they least expect it.

The officer used a wireless microphone to perform the sting, posing as a homeless man by the side of the road where he could see oncoming traffic. He used the microphone to describe the car to other officers when he observed drivers using their mobile devices.

Police would then pull over drivers who violated vehicle-based cell phone laws and conduct a traffic stop on the guilty party while they waited further up the road.

Robinson allegedly “spotted over 30 [violations] in an hour” during his two-hour operation, issuing 56 tickets and issuing 22 warnings to drivers, according to the Daily Mail.

Authorities issued a ticket and fined offenders $83 for using a handheld device while driving. They also deducted one point from their license, unless the offenders had prior infractions.

Some responsible drivers recognized that safety comes first, while others felt frustrated about getting caught. Naturally, they offered a variety of justifications for using their phones while operating a motor vehicle.

There is no excuse for endangering the lives of innocent people because someone pulls out their phone while driving.

Be Careful

In addition to the fact that a cell phone is involved in one out of every four car accidents, the Huffington Post reports that distracted driving, including texting and driving, results in the deaths of nine Americans every day. Is sending a text message worth the chance? Not in my opinion.

If this operation succeeds, authorities will likely plan more initiatives. They choose locations at random, and I suspect other police departments will find this approach appealing as well. Unfortunately, the risk alone doesn’t deter some people from texting and driving, but perhaps the possibility of receiving a ticket will make them think twice. You never know who it might demoralize, so make sure to share it with others. You never know, you might even save someone’s life.
